My first visit to see mum at her home in Ballenita, and my second trip to Ecuador. The habitat in the area is dry scrub, and is probably the least diverse in all of Ecuador! Nevertheless there were still plenty of birds. Garden birds included Saffron Finch, Pacific Hornero, Collared Antshrike, Blue-grey Tanager. Groove-billed Ani, Amazilia Hummingbird, Croaking Ground-Dove, West Peruvian Dove, Eared Dove, Tropical Gnatcatcher, Vermilion Flycatcher, Long-tailed Mockingbird, Necklaced Spinetail, Pacific Parrotlet.
The house is about 100m from the beach, and there are a couple of marshy areas nearby. Birds included Magnificent Frigatebird, Blue-footed Booby, Brown Pelican, Peruvian Pelican, Neotropic Cormorant, Royal Tern, Common Tern, Great Egret, Snowy Egret, Tricoloured Heron, Yellow-crowned Night-Heron, Green Kingfisher, Ringed Kingfisher, Peruvian Meadowlark, Variable Hawk, Turkey Vulture, American Black Vulture, Killdeer.
Quite a lot of parrots in the area, of unknown provenence. I identified Red-masked Parakeet and White-winged Parakeet, doubtless others occur.
